During the summer months, subcommittees will be meeting to review new data, identify priorities, and develop an action plan to address expanded areas of concern, including risk factors for teen pregnancy, teen suicide, and violence/bullying.  The Executive  Committee will continue to work on sustainablity planning.

Recent Events

The CTC has been actively working on a sustainability plan as funding sources wind down over the course of the next 18 months.

The YRBS was administered in the Lynn Public Schools to approximately 7000 middle and high school students on May 2, 2012.  Data will be compared to the results of surveys last conducted in 2010.

The Overdose Prevention workgroup is focusing its attention on increasing prescriber use of the statewide prescription monitoring program.

The April 25, 2012 CTC general coalition meeting included a presentation on marijuana trends.  See attached powerpoint  Marijuana.pptx

We had another successful Prom Parent Initiative with approximately 500 parents attending sessions held in the spring of 2012.  92% indicated that they would discuss their concerns about underage drinking and other topics presented at the forums with their children.

The CTC sponsored a physician' conference/training on June 1, 2011 on Effective Pain Management and Safe Prescribing Practices, geared toward raising awareness about the potential for the abuse of opiates, medication diversion, and overdose risk.  Over 100 medical personnel attended.

The Lynn CTC, which has, and will continue to focus on substance abuse prevention initiatives, is expanding its focus to include other health and wellness issues facing youth including reducing risk factors for bullying and violence, obesity, teen pregnancy, and teen suicide.  Coalition members are currently soliciting data in preparation for creating strategic plans for each of these target areas.

The city of Lynn and the Lynn CTC are continuing to sponsor a safe prescription disposal program.  Unused prescriptions can be dropped off in a receptacle housed at the Lynn Police Station located at 300 Washington Street in Lynn.  The drop off box is accessible 24 hours per day, seven days per week.  Prescription drug disposal program.pub

The September 23, 2009 coalition meeting included a presentation by staff from the Northeast Center for Healthy Communities on capacity building for coalitions.  This information will be used to support CTC efforts to expand its own capacity as well as reach out to provide similar training to other community groups.   Lynn CTC Capacity Building Training Part I Sept 09.ppt

Hazards in Plain View:  What We Don't Know Can Hurt Our Youth:  The Lynn Board of Health held a special meeting on February 2 at Lynn City Hall that included a presentation on the availability of drug paraphernalia in the community by CTC youth council members and Girls Inc. Peer Leaders Group La Verdad.  The meeting was well attended by local officials representing city government and the police department.  As a result of these efforts, the Lynn City Council has passed an ordinance banning the sale of drug paraphernalia in convenience stores.

Prom Parent Nights - Hosted by the Lynn CTC, Lynn Public Schools, Office of Rep. Steve Walsh, Lynn Police Department, Essex County District Attorney's Office, and the Daily Item, these parent information nights were designed to help Lynn parents understand their crucial role and influence on their children's decisions related to high risk behaviors including underage drinking and substance abuse, as well as learn about social host liability laws.  Over 150 parents attended the three events (held at Lynn Classical, Lynn English, and Lynn Tech).

MassCALL2 Opiate Overdose Prevention Initiative:  This initiative is providing ongoing training to consumers, police officers, and prescribing physicians on addiction, opiate overdose risk and prevention.  A series of three trainings are being provided to Lynn police officers on understanding the challenges of working with individuals with addiction.  The city has also recently received funding from the Department of Public Health to undertake an initiative for the safe disposal of prescription medications.
